Hyundai and Kia are offering free steering wheel locks to some vehicle owners as part of their efforts to combat a recent increase in car break-ins.

The increase in vehicle thefts was partially due to the viral TikTok 'Kia Challenge,' which showed how to break into a vehicle using household tools.

Some older Hyundai and Kia models lack an engine immobilizer, making them more vulnerable to theft.

The thefts have been reported in several cities across the US, with New York City seeing a significant increase in December 2022 alone.

Hyundai is also providing law enforcement agencies with the feature to distribute, and has rolled out other anti-theft features to some customers at no cost, with plans to extend it to another three million customers in the coming weeks.
